At ICL, we’re pleased to support grassroots sport and the role it plays in bringing communities together. Our partnership with the U12 Lions at South Woodham Ferrers United is a great example of how local football can create positive, lasting experiences for young players.
From Formation to Success
The Lions were formed in the summer of 2020, when a group of players returned to football sessions and quickly decided to form a team. Starting with 10 boys from local schools, they’ve stayed together ever since, building a strong team dynamic over the years.
Progressing through the FA pathway from 5v5 to 9v9, the team has continued to develop both individually and collectively. Along the way, they’ve achieved promotions in the Blackwater & Dengie league, reached a cup final at U10 level, and this season secured the league title in their first competitive campaign. They now look ahead to another cup final in May.
A Positive Approach to Development
A key part of the Lions’ journey has been their inclusive approach. Reflecting the wider club ethos that “football is for all,” every player is given equal opportunity and game time, recognising that development looks different for everyone.
Training sessions take place twice a week on a 3G pitch and are structured around clear themes—such as defending, possession, or technical skills. Coaches also provide additional support where needed, helping players build confidence and improve at their own pace. Effort and progress are recognised regularly, both by coaches and through team-based awards.
The Role of ICL’s Support
Since the team’s early days, ICL has provided sponsorship to support the Lions’ development. This has included matchday kits, training equipment, and support for key events such as cup finals.
As costs continue to rise across grassroots football, this kind of support helps teams maintain regular training, cover matchday expenses, and provide a consistent experience for players. It also supports the wider club in continuing to offer football across different age groups and formats.
A Strong Community Club
South Woodham Ferrers United plays an important role in the local area, with over 40 teams and a wide range of programmes. From mini football through to adult teams, as well as girls’ football and pan-disability sessions, the club offers opportunities for a broad section of the community.
Looking Ahead
With the league title secured and a cup final approaching, it’s been a strong season for the Lions. More importantly, the team continues to show a consistent attitude towards learning, teamwork, and enjoyment of the game.
As Kevin Mandy, the team’s manager, puts it:
The SWFU U12 Lions represent teamwork, respect, passion and pride—from the coaches to the players and through to the supporters. Every child should have the opportunity to take part in sport and enjoy the benefits it brings, and we’re proud to be creating that environment here.
At ICL, we’re glad to support a team that reflects these values and look forward to seeing how they continue to progress in the seasons ahead.
